What You Need To Know
FAQ
What's included in the cost of the trip?
Our guide trips have no hidden fees. We include all necessary fly fishing equipment, transportation to and from the river, lunch and non-alcoholic beverages. The only items not included in the cost of the trip will be your Montana fishing license and gratuity for your guide.
What do I need to bring for my trip?
Essentials for a day on the river include clothing appropriate for the weather conditions, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and a positive attitude. Montana’s weather can vary from 80 degrees and sunny to 40 degrees, raining, and windy. We always recommend bringing a few layers, even in the summer. In addition you will need a Montana fishing license and gratuity for your guide.
Can I bring my own fishing/other gear?
You can absolutely bring your own rods, reels, flies, waders, tackle, and any other gear. We recommend nine-foot, five and six weight rods with floating lines. Your guide will be happy to rig up your rod if you’d like. They will also let you know if your gear isn’t appropriate for the conditions. If you have cameras or other gear, they are typically welcome as long as it doesn’t negatively impact anyone’s safety or the environment.
Where do I buy my fishing license?
Licenses can be purchased at any local fly shop or sporting goods store. We often have clients meet us at a fly shop to obtain one and last minute provisions if needed. However, we recommend obtaining a license in advance online through Montana Fish and Wildlife HERE.
How do I ensure a great day on the water?
Let us know what you would like to get out of your trip if you have any specific requirements. We touch base at least once before the trip and that’s a great time to let us know what you need. This might include a specific time you need to return, a personal goal for the day, or a desired focus of the trip (kids, scenery, just catching fish). We do our best of craft each trip to the needs of the client.
What's the minimum age recommended for a trip?
Taking kids on the water and teaching them fly fishing is awesome and we highly encourage it. We have fished with children as young as 5. Most children can grasp the concepts around age 10. This all depends on their level of interest, family dynamics, attention span, etc. Children under 11 and younger are required to wear a life jacket at all times on the boat, however, they DO NOT need a fishing license.
When and where do I meet my guide?
We typically meet at local fly shops or areas with public parking. Meeting times are determined by conditions. Your guide or the outfitter will let you know when and where to be beforehand.
What is an appropriate gratuity for my guide?
Your guide works hard and tips are greatly appreciated. The industry standard is $120. If you feel your guide went above and beyond, feel free to tip as you see fit.
